A Nautical Type Day

Vacation Day 3

It's been another wonderful day for Joe and I. We initially decided we would drive through San Francisco and get some idea where the Alcatraz tour leaves from and where we should park for our trip in sometime in the next couple of days. We found the Port of San Francisco and luckily a free parking space in front so we took it as a sign we were meant to explore. What an area rich in history. Most of the old piers have been fixed up inside yet kept with the original facade. We wandered around the back of many of the piers and had an awesome view of San Francisco Bay. We looked for a place to eat and decided on a hidden little place called Sinbad's. It was an older place but the food was delicious and the service was the best we had ever had. We also had a million dollar view of the Bay. We were literally 5 feet away from the water so we could see the high speed ferries, sailboats and luxury yachts going in and out of the harbor.

We figured it was a beautiful sunny day so we'd walk a ways and find the pier where the Alcatraz tour leaves from. We started at Pier 1 and walked to Pier 33. There were old fashioned cable cars running in the center of traffic and lots of double decker tour buses and people from every part of the world traveling the streets. Unfortunately, the tour was sold out for today so we bought tickets for tomorrow afternoon. I'm really looking forward to the ferry ride out and actually seeing the prison. I hope the weather cooperates like it has the last two days.

We took the long trek back to the car and traveled north to the Golden Gate Bridge again. It is just too interesting to not stop and take more photo ops. From there we decided to follow the coast. and circle back to the hotel again. We drove on some of the twistiest, steep and narrow roads through the mountains and valleys and I got my first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean. We stopped at the Muir Beach Lookout and the scenery took my breath away. I was almost like something you'd see in a painting. We walked out to a point and got some great shots of the shoreline. This area runs along the San Andreas Fault Line. Our next stop was to Stinston Beach and I finally got to cross dipping my feet in the Pacific Ocean off my bucket list. Holy crap the water was cold. We walked a little on the beach and gathered some sea glass for Kelsey. Maybe she'll make me something as a souvenir of our trip ;). We continued along the coast a while longer and got back on the interstate and returned to base camp (aka our hotel) just as the sun was setting. We capped the day off with a visit to a brewpub for a bite to eat.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's blog and our new destination.
